Until the beginning of the 20th century, photography was banned in Morocco becauseof an interpretation of Islamic laws prohibiting certain uses of images. In 1901 Abd al-Aziz hired the French photographer Gabriel Veyre as his private photography instructor and overturned this ban. My moms’ education was as a botanist and in the late eighties, her weekend ritual was to take me and my sisters on little trips in the fields and orchards at the edge of the town where we lived, in Israel. My mom would name the flowers in our mother tongue - Hebrew, rather than her mother’s tongue (a dialect of Morrocan) Arabic. Flora is an index for the identification of plants, its function is to allow for the initial recognition of plants, and to name them. Plants have two types of names, botanical names, and common names. The botanic names of plants are generally consistent across geographies and languages, whereas the common names are given by peoples of places, communities, and regions in local dialects and relate to local histories, myths, and religious beliefs.The Hebrew common names are ‘uncommon’ in that only a few of them derive from popular sources like the Arab and Jewish traditions of the country, the Hebrew common names were primarily coined by ‘experts’: linguists, botanists, historians, and others. The effort to name the plants of Palestine in Hebrew intensified in the first half of the 20th century at the time when Zionist activists championed Hebrew Revival and the making of the holy language into a national tongue of everyday speech. By Channeling Hebrew’s sacred qualities into a project of national salvation, supporters of Hebrew Revival wanted to transform Jews into “normal” territorialized nation. The Zionist use of the language was a challenge not only to Arab Palestinians but also to local Jewish communities and their Hebrew. The appropriation of land by means of language is prominent in the Hebrew names of plants, it is visible in the “Palestinian Arum” Hebrew version as “Eretz-Israeli Arum” , the “Palestinian Iris” Hebrew version as “Eretz-Israeli Iris” , and more intrinsic across the breath of the Hebrew Flora, where histories and knowledge are hidden but hopefully not lost in translation. In Flora, I propose the identification of 50 specimens from the Wildflowers of Palestine. The plants’ physical identifications are given in the form of replicas, faux pressed plants, and their impressions. The specimens were adapted from photographs held by the Library of Congress as part of the Matson Photography Collection and dated approximately 1900-1920. The common names of the plants are given in Hebrew, Arabic, and English, the Arabic names were contributed by Reem Ghanayem, a Palestinian Poet and translator. <img width="2000" height="1641" The photograph was part of the essay “Three Mormon Towns” by Lange and Ansel Adams for LIFE magazine. The essay includes three photographs of the house and its surroundings. Behind the house there is a rugged mountainside with remarkable deposits of black lava rocks. The rocks are still there. American Civil War era black powder revolver, designed to have percussion caps, black powder, and bullets individually loaded into its cylinder. Many parts are missing from this artifact with only the frame, barrel, and trigger surviving. All metal surfaces are thoroughly rusted with significant pitting present. The upper-tang appears to be bent at a steeper angle than complete examples, likely an indicator of its time spent in the Virgin River. Text on the back of the painting reads: The emigration to Utah from northern european countries in 1856 was so great that the usual means for transportation across the plains could not be provided. Halting in Iowa City, they were organized into divisions of 100 as they arrived and each division provided with 20 hand-carts, and also one large wagon for reserve supplies and for the use of the sick or infirm. Utilized to perform standard pelvic exams, the instrument would enable its inventor, J. Marion Sims, and his successors an encounter with the inner workings of female genitalia. Yet, the probing objects which appear time and time again in the exhibition lack any ethical dimension. Developed as a result of prolonged experimentation on unconsenting enslaved women of color, the speculum—whose name is derived from the Latin root ‘to look at’ or ‘to observe’—enabled physicians just this function. In TOOLS, Efrat Hakimi recreates an array of surgical instruments she recovered from Sims’ hand-drawn medical diagrams. In Sims’ Figures, Hakimi suspends and reverses the male gaze, which the speculum so forcefully embodies, onto the instruments themselves. Here, each tool has been reconstructed in the form of delicate reliefs, which self-efface from afar. Contrary to the tool’s function in illuminating, her embossed instruments are ones embedded in black heavyweight paper, the works simulating that which is visibly absent from the narrative behind the speculum, the female body itself. In her practice, Hakimi reasserts the feminine through implication, activating the work through the very actions of the tools she investigates—each piece a product of pressing, prying, cutting. Her works, too, hint at the merging of the human body and the instrument; Knife taking the form of a cherry-red nipple and simultaneously performing the slicing function of a knife with its sharp, curved blade. Severed from the body, this work too presents a foil to Hakimi’s Nymphs, an installation of cast hand tools. The work references the Nymphs Fountain, which was temporarily installed on the south lawn of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1899. Built by women students, the fountain, which included ten sculpted figures of nymphs, was violently destroyed by men armed with sledgehammers and crowbars shortly after its installation. Substituting the nymphs for the tools which were used to obliterate them, Hakimi’s sledgehammers take on the characteristics of both the limbs which operate them and the fragmented figures they left behind. Unearthing narratives hidden within the margins of institutional archives and public space, Hakimi threads together intimate encounters with common objects to reconsider received histories. These were the tools used by James Marion Sims, who conducted non-consented experiments and surgeries on enslaved black women in the 1840's in Alabama. Sims didn't use anesthesia and didn't have the consent of Lucy, Betsy, Anarcha, and other women whose names he didn't record. In studying the brutal history of modern gynecology, I was interested in the relationships between what is acknowledged as historic public knowledge and the personal embodied knowledge of the gynecological exam, and in the question- do tools have an ideology?
